Across the street from my office is the Sir Walter Apartments. It was once a grand hotel, but is now subsidized housing for people over 55 who basically have nowhere else to go. It was once described to me as "the place where you don't want to end up."
As an unrepentant smoker, I spend a lot of time in front of my building on breaks and have gotten to know a lot of people who live and work downtown. One woman is a Sir Walter resident named Marilyn. She was an artist when she was younger, and even though life has dealt her a harsh hand in her twilight years, she's got a twinkle in her eye and a very creative spirit.
I was concerned that I hadn't seen her in several months, but was relieved to see her today for a chat. The first thing she asked me was, "So, when are you gonna have a baby?"
